I promised ages ago to post a brief tutorial to show how we make different powders to use instead of store-bought powders. We were running out of onion powder, so that's what I made!
Thanks for Justin for cutting lots of onions. :) I'm fully aware that the knife we used isn't meant for this but it's the only semi-sharp one we have.
I used two onions this time. The cup of tea in the background made this process a lot more pleasant!
Cut the top off your onion so it's easier to peel. You want to get through the skin for sure, but you don't have to peel it as much as you might want to if you were using the onions in cooking. In this case, we'll be grinding the onions anyway so the cosmetics don't matter too much.
You can see that I left some green on the outside of this onion.
I removed the bulb looking part from the middle of the onion. I guess you could leave it in, but I don't care for the stringy texture.
Start chopping your onions. :)
Once you're done chopping, put your onions on an oven-proof plate or dish. I lined mine with foil so it would be easier to clean. Because I don't have a dehydrator, I put them in the oven on its lowest setting. It took about 12-15 hours to completely dry.
I didn't get pictures of this part, but once the onions are dry, I put them in the blender until it was a powder. (Be sure you don't breathe in the dust because it's extremely strong!)
Store in a jar or air-tight container in a dry place. Onion powder will tend to re-absorb water so this is especially important.
Enjoy! :)
I'm not sure I have the patience. lol Does the onion smell the whole it's drying?
