Let the Right One In

Let the Right One In is a Swedish movie from 2008.  It's based on a book which I can't recommend (I haven't read it, but I've read about it that there are more "adult themes" there, so... read it at your own discretion!)

Rating: R for some bloody violence including disturbing images, brief nudity, and language
Cast: Kåre Hedebrant & Lina Leandersson

The Plot:  Eli (Leandersson) is a twelve year old vampire who lives next door to frequently bullied Oskar (Hedebrant).  They become good friends and eventually boyfriend and girlfriend, which means that "nothing changes."  Oskar eventually finds out that Eli is a vampire, and the story goes from there.

What Worked:  Honestly, everything.

What Didn't:  Nothing didn't work.

The Vampires:  There are about a million reasons why the Twilight vampires are ridiculous, and none of those apply to Eli.  She's little and moderately attractive, but she smells funny and can climb up buildings and trees (a too little used piece of vampire lore that comes from Dracula).  In this story, vampires also bursts into violent flame in the sun, whether it's direct or not - unlike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where the vampires smoke for a few minutes and then burn slowly and in specific areas, or Twilight, where the vampires don't burn at all but instead sparkle.

These vampires need to drink human blood, and if they don't kill the person when they're finished, he/she becomes a vampire, too, and since it's a miserable existence, Eli always kills the people.

Oskar: ... is the creepiest kid - no, the creepiest person I've ever seen in a movie.  He's harmless, but still creepy.  It's worth watching just to see him.

"Brief Nudity": Okay, here's the deal.  According to wikipedia, Eli was a boy 200+ years ago but isn't anymore.  You see this for about 2 seconds, during which time you go "... what?" and then move on.  It's not really worth mentioning, to be honest.

Violence: Let the Right One In is definitely not a slasher, but nor is it Hitchcock.  You do see Eli (and another guy, but I won't spoil that for you) kill people, but you never see anyone actually killed.  You'll see the effects, but never the deed, if that makes sense.

The Results:  Highly recommended, though not suitable for children or most young teenagers.  (It's available to watch instantly on Netflix.)

  2. And I have to wait a couple years or watch it with Dad?

It sounds cool, though! 'Cause the vampires don't sparkle. Ever. It's a general rule. (And whoever wrote the script seemed to stick to that. :P )
