Birds and Flowers

My current apartment comes with a little patio right outside my living room. It's kind of ugly on its own - the wood is painted tan and brown and is dirty and probably rotting in some places. Wasps live inside the railings and spiders just love all those little nooks and crannies out there, so it's not the most hospitable place to spend time. I can see it from my couch, where I spend most of my not-cleaning-or-cooking time, so I wanted to make it pretty regardless of the bugs.

[Brief side note: a huuuuge bug ran across the living room floor last night and really freaked us both out. In spite of searching (well, Justin searched - I was sitting on the couch with my feet up), we couldn't find it then, but this morning, I was it. It was a big light colored bug with long antennae. Thankfully, it was already dead when we found it, though Justin squished it for good measure. =P Anyway, this bug got in under the sliding glass doors. Ick!]

Anyway, I hung up a bird feeder in January and waited patiently for the birds to come, which they finally did. Then, when it got warm enough to plant flowers (which, here in Alabama, was in late March, and in fact people have pansies all year 'round), I did that, too. I have the blackest thumb ever, so I was careful to choose easy plants to grow. I also bought semi-expensive soil, trying to make it as difficult as possible for these flowers to die on me.

And here are the results!

  1. Pretty! The cardinal looked like it was on fire at first.

You do have a black thumb. Though, that plant on your windowsill at Mom and Dad's house stayed alive for two months. That was very good.

  2. Very nice pictures. No picture of the big bug?

  3. Your pansies are still alive! Good girl! lol Anyone can have a green thumb. Most people forget to actually *take care* of their plants; that's why they die, but just a little bit of attention will keep them going. :-)

    Love the birds too!

  4. I do not have a black thumb. =P Indoor plants are harder, I've found. As long as I water the outdoor ones, they're happy!

No pictures of the big bug, but another one just crawled out from underneath the counters. It looks like a cricket, but with more legs. The cabinets meet the stove, and the counter goes back against the same wall as the stove, and there's empty space back there which stays moist. The bugs love it. Unfortunately, I can't get at it to clean it - and I can't spray to kill the non-roach-bugs because then the roaches will scatter into the apartment. Life is hard! =P I'm calling the apartment to take care of it, though.
