How to Make Homemade Garlic Powder

Kate asked how I make homemade garlic powder.  It's surprisingly easy, but takes a good amount of patience for tedious work.  I recommend putting on a favorite TV show or movie to make things more interesting.  =)

I start with fresh garlic.  The first thing to do is peel it - both the outer layer of garlic (like the papery stuff on the outside of an onion) and each individual piece of garlic.  It should be smooth by the time you're finished.

Then, cut off the ends of your garlic and get rid of any bad spots.  Spread your garlic out on a baking sheet and put in a warm oven (use your lowest temp setting).  I know some people have dehydrators that make this process easier.

When the garlic is completely dry, I put it in the blender and it makes a nice powder.  Garlic absorbs water like nobody's business, so you want to make sure that your blender is totally dry, too.

I store mine in a jar.  It keeps for about 3 months at room temperature.  I haven't tried freezing it, but I hear you can do that, too.  =)

Enjoy!

  1. That's sounds too easy! Is the taste stronger than store-bought?

  2. Yeah, it's definitely a little stronger, but it's also a better taste, I've found. I think it's the lack of preservatives that makes the difference. :-)
